Redwood forest
Parks: Mt. Madonna County Park, Uvas Canyon County Park, Sanborn County Park, Steven’s Creek County Park
Redwood forest is dominated by the coast redwood tree but also includes California bay, Douglas fir, madrone, and tanbark oak. Other plant species that may be present include bigleaf maple and several species of ferns including chain, bracken, and sword fern. Redwood habitats provide food and cover for a variety of species. Several sensitive species may be found in is habitat type, including the California red-legged frog and ensatina, a small lungless salamander. Typical mammals in this habitat include squirrels, bobcats, and striped skunks. Common birds include the Acorn Woodpecker and the Black-capped chickadees. Redwood forests have dwindled in size as development and climate changes have reduced their current geographic range. Protecting these forests is important to provide habitat for the many specialist plant and animal species that you can find there.
