The Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch historic area of Santa Teresa County Park immerses you in the realities of living and working on a family ranch more than 100 years ago. A self-guided walk around the area takes you through the ranch house, barn, and to the historic Santa Teresa Spring. At each location, you can learn more about California ranch life before the present day.
Originally part of Rancho Santa Teresa, the ranch and surrounding 20-acre property are what remains of the 9,647 acres granted to José Joaquin Bernal in 1834. While suburban neighborhoods sit on most of the original land grant, descendants of the Bernal family owned and worked on the ranch until 1980.
Many panels highlight the Bernal family’s history and lifestyle as well as their businesses. Over the years, the ranch and spring supported cattle ranching, fruit orchards, a water company, cinnabar mine, and a marl (mineral fertilizer) quarry.
